The cheating husband punishment hoax

For a xhole week, American media and blogs ran thousands of comments about this cheating husband in Centreville, Virginia, who was "sentenced" by his wife to stand at a busy cross-roads, with a sign "I have cheated, this is my punishment". But it was only a publicity stunt staged by a local radio station!
Stiill, it raises a number of issues. Should cheating spouses made to apologize publicly? How do American people feel about shaming sentences? Here in France, some think that public humiliation could serve as a valuable alternative to prison sentences, for perpetrators guilty of bullying in schools, cruel hazing, sexual harassment. Would the punishment fit the crime, and deter potential criminals?
